The Asian Energy Studies Centre (AESC), Department of Geography of Hong Kong Baptist University, organised the “Climate Action Community Ambassadors – Leadership Programme” workshop. A total of 12 participants, including students from the course GEOG3007 and members of Village Care Hall, joined the session. The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of energy auditing and empower them with practical tools to assess and reduce energy use within community spaces.
The session featured guest speaker Mr. Kenneth Wong, a Registered Energy Assessor and Project Manager of the Smart Campus Unit (CDO) at the City University of Hong Kong. With nearly 30 years of professional experience in the design, project management, system modelling, and commissioning of building services systems across various sectors—including education, residential, commercial, and government—Mr. Wong shared valuable insights into real-world energy auditing practices.
The workshop began with an introduction to the AI-assisted Simplified Energy Audit Programme, followed by a hands-on practice session in which participants learned about measurement scopes, observation methods, and how to use energy audit tools effectively.
Here’s an overview of the Energy Audit Process, which includes:
Information Collection: Understanding how energy is used in buildings.
Energy Consumption Analysis: Evaluating usage patterns and identifying inefficiencies.
Energy Management Opportunity (EMO) Identification: Reviewing system design, operation, chiller efficiency, AHU control, and identifying Variable Speed Drive (VSD) opportunities.
Cost–Benefit Analysis: Estimating payback periods and environmental benefits.
Audit Report Compilation: Summarising findings and recommendations for implementation.
By the end of the workshop, participants gained a clearer understanding of how energy audits serve as a structured, data-driven process to identify energy-saving opportunities, reduce costs, and cut carbon emissions.
This training marks another step in AESC’s mission to nurture young climate leaders and equip them with the skills and knowledge to promote low-carbon transformation in their communities.
